If you've been dealing with dust mite allergies, you've probably tried everything. Sprays, covers, air purifiers, washing sheets at 60°C twice a week. And you're probably still waking up congested.
That's because most solutions only address the surface. Dust mites don't live on your sheets. They live deep inside your mattress, your pillows, and your duvet. Sprays can't reach them. Covers trap them but don't kill them. Washing your sheets helps for a night, then the colony reinfests from inside the mattress.
The one thing dust mites cannot survive is heat.
What temperature kills dust mites?
Research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that all mites were killed at temperatures of 55°C or greater. At 60°C, mites died within minutes. The same study found that cold washing and detergents did not enhance killing at lower temperatures. Heat is the mechanism, not chemicals.
A separate study on laundry conditions confirmed this. Washing at 30°C killed only 6.5% of dust mites. Washing at 40°C killed just 9.6%. But at 60°C, all mites were killed. Temperature is the single most important factor.

What is dry steam and how is it different?
When people hear "steam" they think of humidity. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions, so it sounds counterintuitive. But dry steam is completely different from the wet steam you see from a kettle.
Regular steam contains large water droplets mixed with vapour. It leaves surfaces damp and can actually increase humidity in a room. Dry steam is superheated well above boiling point, typically above 100°C. At these temperatures, the steam contains less than 5% moisture. It's almost entirely vapour with virtually no liquid water content.
When dry steam hits a surface, it delivers lethal heat deep into the fabric and evaporates within seconds. It doesn't soak your mattress. It doesn't create a damp environment. It kills on contact and dries almost instantly. This is the key difference that makes dry steam effective against dust mites without making the problem worse.
What do the studies say about dry steam and dust mites?
Three independent studies have tested dry steam against dust mites. The results are consistent.
Study 1: University of Glasgow (Clinical and Experimental Allergy)
Researchers at the University of Glasgow tested domestic steam cleaning on carpet squares seeded with dust mites. Temperatures in the treated areas reached an average of 103°C.
The results: no live mites were found in any of the steam treated areas at any point during the study. In the untreated control areas, mite populations grew from 11 to 185 within four months. The study also found an 87% reduction in the primary dust mite allergen (Der p 1) in treated areas compared to just 4.7% in untreated areas.
The researchers concluded that steam cleaning has considerable potential as a highly effective and efficient method of killing dust mites.
Study 2: 50 Home Field Study (Journal of Environmental Monitoring)
A larger study tested dry steam cleaning in 50 homes with wall to wall carpets. The study compared two approaches: HEPA vacuuming alone versus HEPA vacuuming combined with dry steam cleaning.
The results showed that dry steam cleaning combined with vacuuming reduced dust mite allergens by 85.5% and overall dust loading by 64.4%. The study confirmed that dry steam kills dust mites with high temperature vapour above 100°C while simultaneously loosening and removing allergen debris from fabrics.
The practical finding was that vacuuming first, then steaming, then vacuuming again produced the best results. The first pass removes surface debris, the steam kills what's embedded deep inside, and the final pass picks up dead mites and loosened allergens.

Study 3: Carpet and Upholstery Intervention Study
A third study tested dry steam on carpets and upholstered furniture in homes with high dust mite allergen levels. Surfaces were treated once with dry steam at approximately 2.5 minutes per square metre.
Both dry steam cleaning and vacuuming reduced allergen concentrations. But steam cleaning achieved results that lasted up to 8 weeks compared to regular vacuuming alone, because the heat killed live mites rather than just removing surface debris. The mites couldn't recover and repopulate as quickly in treated areas.

Why sprays, covers, and washing aren't enough
Dust mite sprays sit on the surface. They don't penetrate deep enough to reach the colony living inside your mattress. Allergen covers create a physical barrier but the mites inside continue breeding and producing waste. Washing sheets at 60°C kills mites on the sheets themselves but does nothing to the millions living inside the mattress. Within days the clean sheets are reinfested from inside.
The only method that reaches dust mites deep inside a mattress and kills them on contact is heat above 55°C delivered directly into the fabric. That's what dry steam does.
Why 105°C matters
The Glasgow study used steam at 103°C and achieved 100% mite kill with an 87% allergen reduction. The 50 home study confirmed that temperatures above 100°C are effective. The temperature threshold for killing dust mites is 55°C.

No. Dry steam contains less than 5% moisture. You pass over each area for a few seconds and move across the surface. The vapour evaporates almost instantly, killing dust mites without soaking the fabric. Your mattress is dry and ready to use straight away.
This is the most common concern people have, and it's understandable. If regular steam left your mattress damp, that moisture would actually help dust mites breed. But dry steam works differently. The heat is the active ingredient, not the water. The minimal moisture content is what makes it safe for mattresses, pillows, and upholstered furniture.
How often should you steam your mattress?
Based on the research, dust mite populations can recover within weeks if conditions are favourable. The Glasgow study showed untreated areas reaching populations of 185 within four months. The 50 home study showed results lasting up to 8 weeks.
For most people, steaming your mattress every 2 to 4 weeks during the first month, then monthly after that, is enough to keep dust mite populations suppressed and allergen levels low. Pairing steam cleaning with regular vacuuming and maintaining bedroom humidity below 50% gives the best long term results.
